Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) 3D printing services

  • What is Selective Laser Sintering (SLS)?

SLS Selective Laser Sintering 3d printing services involve the use of a laser to sinter powdered metal, plastic, glass, or ceramics into a 3D object. A roller spreads an even coat of powder over the build surface. A high powered laser traces a cross-sectional shape of the object into the powdered material. The sintered particles fused together forming the first solid layer of the object. The powder coated build surface moves downward one layer at a time after each trace. The process is repeated layer by layer until a complete 3D object is formed. SLS rapid prototyping sinters material, but does not actually melt it.

Selective laser sintering prototyping services do not require support material for complex parts. Since the part is supported by loose unsintered powder, various complex shapes and geometries can be achieved. Typically, selective laser sintering 3D printing services will use dual mixture powders. This consists of the actual powder (metal, plastic, etc.) particulate combined with a material to provide a catalyst for sintering. Post processing a SLS prototyped parts usually consists of air blasting to remove excess particles.

  • What type of objects are best for Selective Laser Sintering prototyping services?

SLS rapid printing services support a wide range of powder based materials. This includes powdered plastics, glass, steel, titanium, alloys, and sand. Depending on the material, different sintering processes can be used for models that require various degrees of density. SLS printing services work great for rapid prototyping and limited manufacturing runs. Another growing use for selective laser sintering services is for art, sculpture design, and models. SLS objects can also be custom colored using dye or chemical solutions.

  • Are there any disadvantages to SLS Rapid prototyping?

Selective laser sintering is not as accurate as stereolithography (SLA). Since there is no way to control excess powder being sintered, models will tend to have a grainy appearance. When performing SLS prototyping on plastics, excess plastic particulate may form around the model; requiring post processing.  Models can also be porous, but this is dependent on the component materials used. Upon completion of an SLS process, the model must cool for a certain period of time to prevent warping or stress. In addition, selective laser sintered objects are unable to be machined.
